The Double-Edged Sword: How Technology Gives With One Hand and Takes With the Other

Technology has transformed our lives in incredible ways, but every breakthrough brings new challenges. A reflection on nuclear power, social media, AI, and autonomous vehicles.

Technology is a funny thing.

It has this awesome ability to make life better, easier, and more accessible. It solves problems that once seemed impossible. It opens doors that were previously barricaded shut.

But it also creates new problems we never saw coming.

That’s probably why I find technology so fascinating. I don’t see it as simply “good” or “bad.” It’s messier than that. Almost every major technological advancement comes with a promise and a problem attached, like some kind of cosmic buy-one-get-one deal nobody asked for.

It’s a double-edged sword.

Technology has changed my life

I think about this a lot from a personal perspective.

As someone who is nearly totally blind, technology has opened doors that would have been unimaginable even a few decades ago.

A smartphone isn’t just a phone to me. It’s a reading device, a navigation tool, a way to identify objects, a way to access information, and increasingly, an assistant that can describe the world around me. My phone does more for my independence than most people would ever realise.

Technology lets me work, travel, manage my own life, and participate in society on my own terms.

If I’d been born 100 years ago, my options would have looked very, very different.

That’s incredible.

But when I look at technology more broadly, I also see a lot of complicated questions. The same human creativity that produces life-changing accessibility tools also produces technologies that divide people, disrupt entire industries, and create risks we haven’t even fully understood yet.

Nuclear: the ultimate double-edged sword

Nuclear technology is probably the clearest example of this contradiction.

The same understanding of the atom that gave us nuclear weapons also gave us genuinely useful things. Nuclear medicine helps diagnose and treat diseases. Nuclear power generates huge amounts of electricity with very low operational emissions compared to fossil fuels.

But that same knowledge also created weapons that brought unimaginable destruction to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I’ve visited both places, and standing there changes the way you think about nuclear weapons. The devastation isn’t something you simply read about and move on from. It stays with you.

It’s a bizarre contradiction when you sit with it.

A scientific breakthrough can save lives or end them. The technology doesn’t decide which path it takes. People do.

The question was never just:

“Can we do this?”

The harder question — the one we’re generally worse at answering — is:

“What should we do with this capability once we have it?”

Social media: the world’s biggest neighbourhood

Social media might be the most universal example.

At its best, it’s genuinely incredible. It keeps families connected across the world. It allows people to maintain friendships across distance, discover new interests, and find communities built around things they care about. For many people, it has created connections that simply wouldn’t have existed otherwise.

But there’s another side.

We built a global town square where almost everyone can participate, and then acted surprised when it turned out not everyone behaves well in a town square.

The distance and anonymity of the internet brings out the worst in some people. Harassment, scams, misinformation, and outright cruelty spread faster than ever before. Someone who would never say something hurtful to your face will happily fire it off from behind a keyboard.

We connected the world. We just didn’t automatically make it kinder.

AI: a powerful assistant with complicated consequences

Artificial intelligence feels like the next big inflection point.

For a lot of people, AI is about convenience. For others, opportunity. For someone like me, it can be genuinely transformative.

AI can tell me what a friend posted on social media — not just that there is an image, but what is actually in it. It can read me a restaurant menu without having to flag down a busy waiter. It can tell me if my yogurt has expired, or whether my socks match.

These aren’t headline-grabbing breakthroughs. They’re small moments of independence that most people never have to think about.

But AI also raises difficult questions that we’re barely scratching the surface of.

How do we deal with misinformation when realistic fake content can be created in seconds?

What happens to jobs when machines become capable of doing more and more of the work?

Who controls these systems, and how do we make sure they’re developed responsibly rather than just profitably?

The technology itself isn’t the whole story. The choices we make around it matter just as much — probably more.

Driverless cars: freedom for some, uncertainty for others

Autonomous vehicles are another example of how technology looks completely different depending on where you’re standing.

For someone who can’t drive — hi, that’s me — a self-driving car represents freedom. Travelling when I want, going where I want, without needing to ask anyone or wait for anyone. That’s a big deal.

But for someone who earns their living behind the wheel, it paints a very different picture.

A technology that gives one person independence might pull the rug out from under someone else.

Both perspectives are valid. And that’s one of the hardest things about technological progress: the benefits and the costs aren’t shared equally. They rarely are.

The challenge isn’t stopping technology

It’s tempting to look at all of this and conclude that technology is the problem.

Technology has improved countless lives. It’s made the impossible routine. It’s helped people like me participate more fully in the world.

I’m not about to argue we should put the brakes on.

The challenge isn’t stopping innovation. The challenge is making sure our wisdom, our ethics, and our systems of governance can actually keep pace with the tools we create.

Technology moves faster than regulation. By the time we understand the problems, it’s already embedded in daily life. It’s like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube — technically possible, but you’re going to make a mess.

That doesn’t mean we give up. Every generation faces this. We learn, we adapt, and we build better ways of managing powerful tools.

Because ultimately, technology isn’t what defines us.

How we choose to use it does.
